Steve Smith,Co-Founder Poundland and Investor

In April 1990 Steve founded Poundland, opening the first store in Burton upon Trent. Under Steve’s leadership, the company went on to have 1.5 million paying customers per week and over 5,000 employees with a turnover of close to £200 million. Poundland was one of the fastest growing retailers in the UK and Steve was winner of the national entrepreneur of the year award in 1999. Steve sold the business in 2001 and the company has gone on to turnover £1 billion and float on the stock exchange. Steve has since invested in property transactions, including hotels, residential developments, and commercial outlets. 

Chris Maddox, CEO

Chris worked with Steve during the growth of Poundland and was Finance Director at The Works leading them through a high growth phase from £24m to £98m in revenues. Chris has extensive operational and financial experience spanning of 35 years and is excited to steer poundshop.com into the next period of growth.

Ashley shares his father, Steve’s passion for business. Pound shops have always been a big part of Ashley’s life and his involvement, knowledge, and enthusiasm for taking this shopping phenomenon to the next generation to make this a true family business.
